A suppressed traumatic memory that once held us spellbound with fear can become the vehicle for awakening when it is brought to conscious awareness and viewed from the perspective of the soul.
The consciousness of the soul is the antipode of trauma. Its peace exists far beyond any Earthly travails. Thus, bringing one’s attention completely to it immediately causes us to transcend any traumatic reaction.
But the relief from trauma that the soul provides although extremely helpful, is only a temporary solution. For when we return to our Earthly personality, the psychological work of healing still must be completed.
Why is this? Why can’t we just rise above the terrible traumas we experience here on Earth and thereby release them? It is because as painful as trauma may be, it often plays an essential role in our psycho-spiritual evolution. Thus, it cannot be resolved until the psyche has fully witnessed it and processed all of its associated emotions.
For this reason, even after I have removed a client from reliving a particularly traumatic memory, and brought them to the peace and equanimity of their soul, they may still choose to return to the painful memory. They make this choice because they know that the trauma can never be healed until they have fully come to terms with the experience.
After having viewed the trauma from the perspective of the soul, they now know they can find relief from (at least temporarily) the horror and terror of its memories. Thus, the trauma’s grip over the psyche is loosened, and it is much more empowered to heal.
Bringing trauma to conscious awareness The psyche knows how to heal itself. But it cannot heal that which it has denied. Therefore, the goal in the sessions is to gently bring the trauma to conscious light.
There is no attempt in the sessions to erase traumatic memories. Rather their goal is to restore psychic balance by contacting the healing energies within.
The power of the soul is the very source of those energies. It can bridge the gap between the pain of trauma and the psyche’s capacity for joy and equanimity. By doing this, it helps restore equilibrium within the nervous system between the sympathetic state of trauma and the parasympathetic state that enables healing and restoration. Thus, the soul plays a fundamental role in the psyche’s capacity for self-healing.1
Summary of How Soul-Contact Supports Healing Trauma
Undoing Trauma’s Self-Perpetuating Cycle The psychological harm caused by trauma is not from the event that happened to us, but our reaction to it. This reaction is then perpetuated when the unconscious mind is retriggered by the recurring memory.
The resulting self-feeding cycle can be broken by accessing the unconscious with an alternative set of facts. But to achieve this, that alternative must be more compelling than the memories that trigger the traumatic reaction.
The reality used in the sessions to interrupt this cycle is soul-contact. The soul has the power to do this because its eternal peace and joy is the originating principle of the psyche.2 Through contacting the soul, the cycle of trauma is interrupted and the negative emotions associated with its events begin to lose their power over the mind. In this way, soul-contact can help open the doorway to healing. Thus, we see that soul-consciousness can fulfill a specific function in the healing process. By allowing us to temporarily transcend trauma, it lessens the threat posed by its associated negative emotions. This enables the trauma to be more easily processed by the conscious mind where it can be eventually healed.
Not a Panacea
However, it should be noted that even though it can play a key role in psycho-spiritual healing, consciously experiencing the soul is not a substitute for doing our psychological work and addressing the trauma at its source. Even after witnessing the events that caused the trauma from the soul’s transcendent perspective, healing may still be a long and arduous process.
The experiences that caused the trauma may be so painful that the psyche is only able to bring them to awareness a little bit at a time. Much like peeling an onion, removing one layer of it often reveals yet another to be witnessed. To fully heal, we must process all the emotions that the trauma brings up. If the trauma is very severe, this may take years, and its memories may have to be revisited many times.
A Delicate Balance
During the sessions, memories may arise from previous incarnations. This is because the soul carries with it recollections not only from this life but from other lives that contain important lessons for its evolution. Some of them can be particularly challenging, such as one’s own horrifying death in a past life or that of a loved one.
My role as a facilitator requires me to guide the client and keep them safe. This can be very demanding as I relive the client’s painful experiences with them. To achieve this, I must experience a deep empathetic bond with the client while at the same time maintain enough detachment to see their situation clinically and objectively. In addition to this, I need to be a clear vehicle for the Divine Energies that will guide the session.
I support the client in remembering their trauma so that all the emotions associated with it can be brought to conscious light. But I must also make sure they don’t become overwhelmed by the intensity of their memories. Sometimes there is a very fine line between the two.
If I feel that they are becoming too caught up in reliving a difficult experience, I return their awareness to the peaceful consciousness of their Soul. This immediately lifts them from their emotional pain.
In this way the awareness of the soul enables the client to relive some of their most trying experiences without danger of becoming overwhelmed by their intensity.
Because our clairvoyant bond allows us to go through these events together, the client knows that they are no longer alone with their experience. This greatly supports the process of healing.
- The soul’s functionality within the human psyche is not limited to those relatively few who consciously acknowledge its existence, or contact it through meditation or other means. It is the source energy from which the psyche emerges at the beginning of life and returns to at its end. As such, it is the quintessential power for the psyche’s healing and renewal. Its healing power is available to anyone who wishes to experience it.
The soul lies within every one of us, and it is really quite easy to contact. There are many ancient spiritual practices that support soul-contact. Among them are meditation and prayer.
It is the business of thoughts and distractions that drown out our awareness of the Soul. This is why, taking time to yourself and quietening the mind support Soul contact. But the main thing to realize is that your soul is waiting within you to be discovered. Creating a relationship with it is one of the most wonderful and rewarding things a person can ever do. ↩︎ - When some read this, they will no doubt ask the question: “If the eternal joy of the soul is the source of the human personality, then why are so many people miserable?”
The answer is that as most of us go through life, we lose contact with our soul. This explains why babies are so joyful and full of love. For they have newly arrived from having been merged with the consciousness of their Soul, which is love itself. We are born from love and at life’s end, we return to it, for love is the nature of the Soul. ↩︎
